Quotation Ego in dei omnipotentes nomine Liutprand excellentissimus rex deo dilectae et catholicae gentis langobardorum reminiscor quoniam iam in superiore edicti corpore adicere curavimus … pertractantes omnia et recurrentes antiquioris edicti capitula una cum iudicibus et reliquis langobardis fidelibus nostris…
Translation 1, Liutprand, in the name of God the almighty, most excellent king of the divinely chosen Catholic nation of the Lombards, recall that it is now some time since we provided an addition to the body of earlier laws … going over and reviewing all the titles of the earlier edicts with the judges and the rest of our Lombard fideles… (Emended from K. Fischer-Drew, trans., The Lombard Laws (1973), p. 153)
Summary The prologue to the legislation issued in the ninth year of Liutprand's reign (721 CE), identifies Liutprand as law-giver and king of the Lombard people, and gives the date that the laws were issued and a motivation for their further review and expansion. The prologue states that the judges and the remainder of the Lombard people participated in the promulgation of the new laws.
