Translation If anyone creates a scandalum [disturbance] in a church shall pay forty solidi to that venerable place in addition to [the composition paid] him who suffered the wounds or injuries. The abovementioned forty solidi shall be collected by the schultheis or judge of the district and laid on the holy altar of that church where the offense occurred. (emended from K. Fischer-Drew, trans., The Lombard Laws (1973), p. 59)
Summary Rothari, No. 35 explicitly addresses the situation when a disturbance takes place in a church, setting a forty solidi fine for the crime, which was then to be placed on the altar by the local legal official. Composition for any injuries sustained in the disturbance was also to be paid as normal.
